In July 1951 the world’s first transistor was announced at a press conference and five years later this discovery led its inventors sharing a Nobel prize for physics. The first radio to be sold commercially was in November 1954 in the USA and in the United Kingdom Pye sold its first transistorised radio in June 1956. It was the Pam model 710, which used 8 transistors. Before the end of the decade most UK manufacturers were producing high quality transistorised radio receivers.

Bang & Olufsen announced its interest in transistorisation with the Beolit 606AM portable radio, the first Beolit radio with transistorised circuitry, able to receive radio broadcasts on the AM waveband.
