Bang & Olufsen and the Aston Martin DBS - the BeoSound DBS
The BeoSound DBS was the first co-operation between Bang & Olufsen and Aston Martin in producing an Advanced Sound System for the Aston Martin DBS.
BeoSound DBS was developed exclusively for the Aston Martin DBS, acoustically and physically matched to the car. While the visual anodised aluminium elements matched seamlessly with the dynamic lines and curves of the vehicle, the sound performance was designed to the exact dimensions of the interior. This ensured the listener was enveloped and engaged in a complete acoustic experience which effortlessly complemented the outstanding power and supreme balance, handling and ride - both hallmarks of an Aston Martin.
Exceeding expectations
Through the use of pioneering acoustic competencies and proprietary technologies, Bang & Olufsen in conjunction with Aston Martin managed to reach the highest possible level of seamless integration, resulting in an incomparable ambience.
Proprietary ICEpower technology offered a sought-after combination of high power and hi-fi sound quality with ultra-compact design and cool operation.
Acoustic Lens Technology (ALT) enabled a wide (180°) horizontal dispersion of high frequencies. The proprietary technology prevented the loss of critical sound and gave listeners an improved sense of space, staging and realism, even when not sitting in the optimal listening position - the “sweet spot”.
Even the best speaker and the best amplifier would sound wrong in a car unless adapted to that car through the use of advanced Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and sound tuning. DSP essentially stages the musical performance. The combination of the advanced DSP and hours spent tuning each system by ear ensured all loudspeakers worked together seamlessly to deliver the best listening experience possible.
Custom-moulded closed-cabinet loudspeaker boxes ensured that the same conditions were maintained for each loudspeaker regardless of position or what was happening in the surrounding environment. There was thus less sound leakage and more control.
Furthermore, BeoSound DBS adapted automatically to changing noise conditions. This dynamic tuning permitted occupants to concentrate exclusively on an engaging driving and listening experience. The result was crisp and clear sound at all volumes, which made the sound system the perfect match for the commanding performance of the Aston Martin.
Designed to match
Translating pioneering acoustic technologies such as these into a functional yet elegant design language, the look and feel of the sound system was a perfect reflection of the Aston Martin ethos of Power, Beauty and Soul as well as a strong testament to the innovative design excellence and long-established craft tradition of Bang & Olufsen. As such, the BeoSound DBS was the embodiment of the art of shaping sound to the interior contours of performance cars, focusing not only on horsepower or output power, but on the overall experience and musicality in every sense of the word.
Bang & Olufsen BeoSound DBS Volante specifications
- ICEpower®: The BeoSound DBS Volante incorporates Bang & Olufsen’s proprietary ICEpower® technology, a fusion of high power and hi-fi sound quality with ultra-compact design and sleek, functional operation
- Amplification: 1000 Watts of power amplification
- Acoustic Lens Technology (ALT): The proprietary and automatically operated ALT, mounted either side of the dashboard, enable 180° horizontal dispersion of high frequencies, giving listeners an improved sense of space, staging and realism, regardless of their location
- 13 loudspeakers: In addition to the two tweeters incorporated into the ALT, the system comprises five mid-range speakers, three further tweeters and three woofers, including a powerful 200mm subwoofer mounted beneath the rear bench. In all, 13 speakers are positioned in ten locations around the car
- 13-channel Digital Signal Processing (DSP) platform: DSP is at the heart of the BeoSound DBS Volante. DSP stages the musical performance, ensuring that all loudspeakers work together seamlessly. Programming the advanced DSP is highly complex and requires hours of sound tuning by ear. The combination of pioneering technology and human listening ensures the digital capabilities of the DSP deliver the best listening experience possible
- Loudspeaker Cabinets: Closed-cabinet loudspeakers ensure that the same conditions are maintained for each individual loudspeaker no matter where it is placed or what happens in the environment surrounding it. There is less sound leakage and more control
- Dynamic tuning: Cabin noise (recorded using an onboard microphone) fan noise and information about speed are continually fed to the DSP amplifier. The amp adjusts the performance of each and every speaker so that the sound is not degraded by this noise, ensuring that the listening experience is always optimised for the surrounding conditions
