After a very successful 18-year run with few changes being made along the way, the BeoLab 8000 was replaced by the updated BeoLab 8002 on 17 September 2010.
Its former Class AB amplifiers were replaced by more-efficient and smaller ICEpower amplifiers. Two 125W amplifiers were incorporated. Because less heat is produced by ICEpower amplifiers the heat sinks on the Beolab 8002 could be made smaller and therefore more aesthetically discrete. Sound quality remained as it was in its former guise.
The LED on/off swich was repositioned on the newer model to differentiate between the Beolab 8000 and 8002 models.
Like other active speakers in the 2010 range a three-position switch to signify wall, corner and ‘free’ positions was included although the previous model’s phono plug was excluded. There remained but one Power Link socket on the newer model as per the previous model.
Connections in the BeoLab 8002:

Connections in the Beolab 8002:Bang & Olufsen design icons with new technologyBang & Olufsen’s iconic column loudspeakers were labelled “impossible sound design” when first introduced. However, BeoLab 6000 and BeoLab 8000 are still much coveted by the customers and have now been updated with new technology. When first launched in 1992, the Bang & Olufsen column loudspeakers created an outrage. No one believed that such slim and aesthetic loudspeakers would be able to compare on sound performance with the mastodon “black box” loudspeakers of that time. However, the striking design and outstanding sound performance immediately gained the customers interest and that of competitors too, as BeoLab 6000 and BeoLab 8000 have become some of the most copied designs in loudspeakers today. To allow BeoLab 6000 and BeoLab 8000 to remain at the forefront in their acoustic capabilities and stay available to the customers, Bang & Olufsen has updated the iconic loudspeakers with a number of technical improvements and minor design changes.ICEpower amplifiers
Maintaining the well-known outstanding sound performance and their stylish, elegant appearance, BeoLab 6000 and BeoLab 8000 are now available with ICEpower amplifiers of 2 x 125 watts, new, cutting-edge driver units and a reduced cooling grill thanks to the ICEpower amplification. For BeoLab 6000, a design change has also been made on the surface of the foot, which is now sunpolished aluminium to match the Bang & Olufsen TV stands it often is placed close to.Manual room adaptation
A manual position switch placed in the socket panel of both loudspeakers allows adjustment of the loudspeaker performance according to the placement in the room. The switch has got three settings, enabling the user to easily switch between corner, wall or free-standing position. With this update the names of the two column speakers have changed to BeoLab 6002 and BeoLab 8002 respectively.Source: Bang & Olufsen (Press Release 17.09.10)
