During late April’s Apple earning call, company executives boasted there were 28 million tracks for sale on iTunes, confirming at the same time that they had 9 million more over Amazon.com

Many of Apple’s downloadable songs are now ‘Mastered for iTunes’: ‘Music as the Artist and Sound Engineer Intended’, they say. But does it really matter and actually make downloaded music sound better? And should BeoSound 5 users buy the better-quality, higher-encoded tracks in favour of others available?

Many say yes, it’s what users should be downloading. And others say no, it makes not one iota of difference.

We at BeoPhile.com say that there is a noticeable difference between say, 128 kbit/s recordings versus 192 kbit/s encoding. But we are not really too sure between 192 and 256 (or even 320kbit/s and uncompressed versions).

It’s all a case of caveat emptorread more to see what you think and then make up your own mind!
